Nightmare on Elm Street

This film is out today in the UK (and looks awesome.) I think I’ve talked about this before on my Twitter but it looks like a rather good take on the old film. It seems creepy, not veering too far from the original film yet still worth the overpriced cost of visiting a cinema.

I’ve only seen the first film out of the series and I loved it. It was Johnny Depp’s first ever film, it was arguably quite dated but it still kept my attention and was enjoyable. I would watch it again and it’s my idea of a good popcorn film. This remake looks like it’ll be similar in that respect. From the posters to the TV spots it look like I could easily sit there, silently moving a single piece of popcorn into my mouth very slowly… The director, Samuel Bayer, is fairly unknown when thinking about films. Most of the previous work is primarily made up of rock music videos, so I’m interested to see his take on this film, being a more long-form media.

Earle

Freddy Krueger hasn’t changed too much and the actor is literally perfect for the role. If I was to choose anyone over Robert Englund to play this role, it would be Jackie Earle Haley. He was awesome in Watchmen and then even better in Human Target. Rorschach and Guerrero are completely different characters but I love them both, despite being rather despicable people; I really hope Jackie Earle Haley manages this same effect with Freddy. I don’t have any reason to doubt that he will. I’m not going to lie that he is the main reason I’m going to pony up the money to see this on the big screen.

I’m watching this film. I’ll probably tell you about it after I have but as it is I’m really excited. It looks to be something good. This film seems to be a bit more focused on Freddy himself than on Nancy, so I do wonder how that shift will work when it comes to the story.
