Ubisoft has announced that they will be implementing a ridiculous new DRM system on their games. Specifically: Assassins Creed II. The new system will require you to be connected to the Ubisoft servers continuously in order to play a single player offline game. This is just stupid and will lose them a lot of sales. No one has a perfect internet connection; that just doesn’t exist.
By trying to cut their losses caused by piracy, they’ve shot themselves in their collective feet and will probably (hopefully) lose more money due to this system. Just to add insult to injury: A pirated version of this game has already been leaked onto the internet. The official Ubisoft servers have suffered a few Denial Of Service attacks, a weak spot in their DRM which will stop the actual paying customers from being able to play the game.
To recap: before the official release you could play this game for free without a constant internet connection through pirating, since the release paying customers can’t connect to the Ubisoft servers and so can’t play at all. Piracy is actually better than the real deal. Personally, I won’t pirate Assassins Creed 2 but I won’t buy it either.
I really want the game but I’m refusing to give money to a company which is trying to make this DRM system commonplace among PC gaming. Even if I didn’t care about the DRM side of things, logically I just wouldn’t pay for the PC version of this game. My internet connection isn’t perfect and their servers aren’t perfect, considering that if either of these things mess up I’ll lose game progress it’s just too likely that the DRM will get too fustraiting. Add to this that in all likelihood I will only want to play an offline game when I don’t have access to my online ones. It’s just pointless.
