The BAFTAs are fast approaching

Not too fast, though. It’s under a month, sure, but that’s more than enough time to watch everything, make my picks and (as of this year) place my bets. Usually the BAFTAs are generally something people either watch with families, watch with a passion or don’t watch at all. I like films but I don’t watch the BAFTAs. I’m going to change that this year.

I know most people aren’t really thinking about the BAFTAs yet, it’s not even February so if this is a bit tedious, sorry. (Also: tough.) As it is I plan to watch every film up for nomination and will do a post on each category explaining my thoughts. I’m going to try and get together around £25-£30 to bet on it overall, if I can get more I’ll probably hedge them somewhat, but we’ll see.

As yet, the nominations involve the following films I’ve already seen: An Education, Up in The Air, District 9 and Inglorious Basterds.

And the nominations which I’ve not seen yet, and to be honest aren’t looking forward to having to watch with some: Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Precious, Moon, Nowhere Boy, Fish Tank, In The Loop, Crazy Heart, A Single Man, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, Julie & Julia, The Lovely Bones, CoCo Before Chanel, Me and Orson Welles and It’s Complicated.

This is going to be a hard month, some of these films I >really< didn’t want to watch this year. As to why I haven’t seen them yet. To be honest, the worst is still to come (next paragraph), yet to be fair the four films I have watched were all rather good. I mean Up in The Air and District 9 are both films I still watch regularly.

Anyway so after that it’s one of the major categories, which I’ve kind of already made my mind up on, and is my favourite: the Rising Star Award. Basically any “new” actors or actresses who’ve really come into their own and proved their talent within the last year end up here. These people will usually have one major film which got them nominated, but their entire film career should really be looked at, which makes it a better award in my thoughts. The people up for the award this year are: Kristen Stewart, Carey Mulligan, Nickolas Hoult, Jesse Einsenberg and Tahar Rahim. I’ve kind of already decided that I might skip watching Twilight, if only to save my ability to take humanity seriously, but there’s a chance I’ll YouTube a couple clips or something… Painful.
