Wii Fit

The Wii Fit is a fairly obvious game, it seems, this balance board is chucked full of sensors and the game helps you work out your BMI. It then makes the slightly unbelievable claim that it helps actually lose weight, but does it?

The game itself was first released in 2007 in Japan, but didn’t reach Europe till April 25th 2008. It’s currently the second highest selling game of all time, which I was surprised by, second to Wii Play. Then, in October of 2009 Nintendo followed up by selling the Wii Fit Plus, this includes the original 50 or so games and added on an 21 extra activities. Again claiming to further help you lose the LB’s

The Wii Fit was the big thing, many parents bought it and despite all the stupid adverts featuring fake-families painfully enjoying the exercise, it sold well. But beyond that I don’t know, obviously knowing your Body Mass Index is a good thing, but can standing on some moulded plastic really help with the weight? From what I can tell most people take that with a grain of salt, using the Wii Fit to either learn how to do push ups and the like correctly or in conjunction with an improved diet and gym routine to just help with motivation.

What I’m thinking, the game’s been out since 2007, it’s now 2010, has anyone actually conducted any form of scientific experiment to whether the Wii Fit will actually make you fitter? Be it by Nintendo, one of their competitors or an independent third party; it would be nice to have the clarity.
