2012. It’s an OK movie. I mean it’s not great, not even a match to The Day After Tomorrow (Which I enjoyed.) But it is most definitely a popcorn film. And it wasn’t terrible. The basic storyline behind this is as follows: The London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony sucked so much compared to China’s that the world literally gave up and decided to destroy itself.

OK, the actual “disaster movie” bit of this movie isn’t so much focused on the disaster. Half the film revolves around running from the destruction and the Computer Generated Imagery is there. My biggest issue with the film is the unreal factor, the destruction is just too great, too fast and too focused for anyone to realistically get away alive and yet; surprise surprise our heroes JUST make it. The CGI itself wasn’t impressive at all, in fact it was pretty obviously fake, maybe five years ago it would fly but now it was just poor.
The second section was obviously their main reason for making the film. A pretty poorly constructed social commentary on the rich/poor, scientific/political divide. A handful of people representing the good, selfless and pure all trying to fight for their survival, mixed in with the rich and powerful, all of which had previously guaranteed their safety; this film attempts to portray their thoughts on how a real life world disaster would actively play out. The film tried to keep the balance between action and issue but I’m not too sure it was successful. A fairly decent cast, I do think Woody Harrelson’s character was slightly overplayed but it was really nice to see Amanda Peet as I loved her in Studio 60.
All in all, I was glad I had some snacks to chomp on. Chiwetel Ejiofor played quite an interesting character but was a bit too submissive, Amanda Peet was fun but slightly heartless towards the end. The general morals this film portrays were mostly silly and the very end was just terrible. One part even completely negated from the whole point of the story, giving them an alternative route of survival which would have been a lot simpler and had a higher survival rate. I wouldn’t recommend the film but if you’re going to watch it, get popcorn.
